29th July: Lewis: 3 Sooty Shearwaters off the Butt. Marine: 4 Basking Sharks and 25 Common Dolphins off the Butt and 1 Basking Shark off Port of Ness this morning. 50 Common Dolphins off Tiumpan Head (SE) this evening. 27th July: Lewis: A Quail was at Bragar again today. South Uist: A juvenile Cuckoo was seen in south Glendale.
26th July: Lewis: 2 juvenile Short-eared Owls were seen in Flesherin, Point at the end of last week; indicating that a pair have bred in the area. South Uist: 2 summer plumage Knot were at Ardvule this afternoon. A Crossbill was heard calling at North Loch Eynort. Insects: A Gold Spangle and probable Orchard Ermine were trapped around South Glendale last night. The Gold Spangle has only previously been recorded on Barra and Orchard Ermine will be new for the Outer Hebrides if confirmed.
25th July:
24th July: Lewis: A Grey Phalarope was seen off Mangersta this morning along with 117 Storm Petrels. Marine Sightings: A Minke Whale, 3 Bottle-nosed Dolphins and a Basking Shark were seen off Mangersta today. 23rd July: South Uist: 9 Crossbills are at North Loch Eynort this morning. 22nd July: Lewis: A Red-necked Phalarope and 2 Whimbrel are at Loch Barvas. A Crossbill is in Upper Barvas.
20th July: Benbecula: 6 summer plumage Knot were in Stinky Bay this afternoon. Insects: A Cinnibar moth was one of 30 species of macro moth trapped at Drimsdale, South Uist last night. The striking micro moth Catoptria pinella was trapped at Eochar last night. This is the first record for the Outer Hebrides.
19th July: South Uist: At least 24 Sand Martins were at Drimsdale this morning and another 2 flew north at Stoneybridge this afternoon. Insects: 3 more Riband Waves were caught at North Loch Eynort last night along with Pinion-streaked Snout and Double Square-spot.
18th July: Lewis: A Quail was flushed at Bragar and a Turtle Dove is in the village there. A pair of Whinchats are at Barvas. South Uist: 2nd summer Little Gull is still at Rubha Ardvule along with 2 Whimbrel. The moulting male Goosander was on the sea at Stoneybridge / Peninerine. An adult Cuckoo was by the main road just north of Bornish.
16th July: South Uist: A 2nd summer Little Gull is at Rubha Ardvule and 4 Knot flew over. A juvenile Cuckoo is at Bornish and a male Whitethroat is at North Loch Eynort. A Grasshopper Warbler was singing near the Pollachar today. Insects: A Small Dotted Buff was trapped at South Glendale last night.
15th July: South Uist: A Swift was over Eriskay this afternoon. 14th July: South Uist: 2 Swifts flew east near Ardmore around mid-day.
13th July: Lewis: A Glaucous Gull was seen at Port of Ness. Insects: 2 Riband Waves were trapped at North Loch Eynort last night. This is the first record for the Outer Hebrides.
12th July: South Uist: An Osprey was seen circling over Rueval before heading north-eastwards late this afternoon. It was then seen fishing Loch Druidibeg around 8 pm. A House Martin was also hawking on the west side of Rueval. The Whitethroat is still occasionally singing at North Loch Eynort.
11th July: South Uist: A 2nd summer Little Gull was at Rubha Ardvule today. Insects: A Ringlet was seen in South Glendale today.
10th July: Insects: A Wood Tiger moth was seen near South Glendale today along with 8 Brown China Marks. 3 Double Lobed moths were trapped at Carnan, South Uist last night.
9th July: Insects: 2 Grayling, 8 Dark Green Fritillaries, a Red Admiral and 34 Common Blue butterflies were seen around South Glendale today. A Rustic was trapped at South Glendale last night.
8th July: Benbecula: 21 Black-tailed Godwits and 18 Bar-tailed Godwits were on Loch Mor this morning. South Uist: A male Whitethroat was singing at Parks, Eriskay this morning. 7th July: North Uist: 33 Black-tailed Godwits were on Loch Olobhat today. The pair of Whooper Swans at Balranald have 6 well grown cygnets and 6 Whooper Swans are still on Loch Sandary. 6th July: Insects: A Bordered Grey was trapped at North Loch Eynort last night. This is a first for the Outer Hebrides and classed at Nationally Scarce A (thought to occur in 30 or less 10 km squares in the UK). 5th July: Lewis: A Swift was seen over Willowglen, Stornoway today. Marine Sightings: Around 8 Common Dolphins were seen from the Uig - Lochmaddy ferry this morning approximately half an hour out from Lochmaddy.
4th July: Lewis: 100 Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Barvas this evening and an immature male Hen Harrier was also seen. South Uist: An Osprey was seen at Loch Druidibeg again. 2 Swifts were seen in Askernish today. 3rd July: Lewis: A Crane has continued to hang around the Crossbost / Ranish area all week. 2 Swifts were around Laxdale. 2nd July: Lewis: 13 Swifts were around the Butt of Lewis. South Uist: An Osprey was seen at Loch Druidibeg this afternoon around 13:00 before drifting off east. Insects: A Double Dart moth was trapped in South Glendale last night. 1st July: Benbecula: A moulting female Red-necked Phalarope is still present at the regular site. South Uist: 2 Swifts were over Balgarva in the afternoon. |
