31st July:

South Uist: A Sand Martin was over Loch an Eilein, Drimsdale this afternoon.

30th July:

North Uist: A female Crossbill was at Langass this afternoon.

Insects: A Hummingbird Hawkmoth was seen at Seilebost, Harris today. At least 50 Painted Lady butterflies at Balranald this morning.

29th July:

Lewis: Sooty Shearwater off Bru. 4 Black-tailed Godwits, 12 Bar-tailed Godwits, 50 Knot and 15 Greenshank at Steinish.

South Uist: Sooty Shearwater off Ardvule this morning.

Marine sightings: 2 Bottle-nosed Dolphins off Ardvule, South Uist.

28th July:

Lewis: 64 knot, 10 Bar-tailed Godwits, 13 Greenshank and 4 Black-tailed Godwits at Steinish. 12 Crossbills around Stornoway Golf Course.

Benbecula: 13 Black-tailed Godwits at Torlum.

27th July:

Lewis: 10 Greenshanks and 10 Bar-tailed Godwits at Steinish.

South Uist: 73 Knot on the South Ford. 2 Crossbills at South Glendale.

26th July:

South Uist: At least 2 Crossbills were at North Loch Eynort today.

Insects: A report of a Ruddy Darter last week at Balranald was passed on from Jamie Boyle. This would be a first for the Outer Hebrides and a significant range expansion from their normal area.  He also mentioned a Golden-ringed Dragonfly was seen at Howmore, South Uist recently.

25th July:

Lewis: 12 Bar-tailed Godwits, 4 Black-tailed Godwits and 5 Greenshank at Steinish.

North Uist: Immature Glaucous Gull at Callernish.

South Uist: A Little Gull was at North Bay and a couple of Crossbills at South Glendale.

This Common Dolphin recently photographed from Skye by Bob MacMillan shows a very distinctive cross to the beak.

24th July:

South Uist: A single Crossbill was at Snishival this evening.

Marine sightings: 25 Common Dolphins were off the Braigh, Lewis this afternoon.

23rd July:

Marine sightings: A Minke Whale and a few distant dolphins were to the east of Tiumpan Head this morning.

Coxcomb Prominent and Double Dart trapped at Marybank, Lewis last night.

22nd July:

Lewis: A Sooty Shearwater off Barvas in the evening. White-fronted Goose and 2 Long-tailed Ducks still on Loch Branahuie.

Benbecula: 17 Greenshanks were at Gramsdale early morning.

South Uist: Spotted Redshank on Eochar Machair (Ardivachar end)

Marine sightings: 50 Common Dolphins off the Braigh, Lewis and 20 to the north of Tiumpan Head. 5 dolphins were rescued after coming ashore on Grimsay today and were reported as White-sided. Harbour Porpoise was in the Sound of Harris and a large Basking Shark was off Barvas / Brue.

21st July:

Lewis: 2 Black-tailed Godwits flew over Loch Branahuie this morning. The White-fronted Goose and 2 Long-tailed Ducks are still present.

20th July:

Lewis: 9 Knot, 7 Bar-tailed Godwits and 5 Greenshank at Steinish this morning. White-fronted Goose and 2 Long-tailed Duck on Loch Branahuie.

Benbecula: 14 Black-tailed Godwits on Loch Mor.

South Uist: Wood Pigeon at South Glendale.

19th July:

Benbecula: A male Marsh Harrier was reported to the south of Loch Fada around 13:30.

18th July:

Lewis: 8 Greenshank, Bar-tailed Godwit and Black-tailed Godwit at Steinish. White-fronted Goose and 2 Long-tailed Ducks at Branahuie.

North Uist: 1st summer Glaucous Gull at Scolpaig.

Insects: 3 Grayling on the southern edge of Lochboisdale this afternoon.

17th July:

Lewis: White-fronted Goose and 2 Long-tailed Ducks still on Loch Branahuie.

16th July:

Lewis: 2 Crossbills around Branahuie. White-fronted Goose and 2 Long-tailed Ducks still on Loch Branahuie.

South Uist: 8 Crossbills at Loch Druidibeg this morning. Immature Glaucous Gull at Ardivachar.

Insects: At least 2 Dotted Carpets were trapped in Lews Castle Grounds, Stornoway last night. This is another new species for the Outer Hebrides. Small Tortoiseshells appeared widespread today with at least 8 at the north end of South Uist plus Red Admiral at Ardivachar. 127 moths of 28 species trapped at Carnan last night.

15th July:

South Uist: At least 3 Crossbills at North Loch Eynort this morning. 2 Crossbills on the lower slopes of Ben Sciathan, Eriskay.

Cetaceans: A Harbour Porpoise was to the south of the point at Ardvule. 

Insects: 322 macro moths of 18 different species were trapped at South Glendale, South Uist last night. 71 Graylings and 5 Dark Green Fritillaries on Ben Sciathan, Eriskay. A Peacock butterfly, 2 Painted Ladies and 2 Small Tortoiseshell at Carnan, South Uist.

14th July:

South Uist: 250 Golden Plover on Eochar Machair today.

Insects: 7 Small Tortoiseshells and a Red Admiral feeding on a small patch of thistles in Backhill, Berneray today.

13th July:

Benbecula: 3 Black-tailed Godwits at Loch Mor.

South Uist: Juvenile Cuckoo at Snishival. 14 Crossbills at Carnan briefly this afternoon.

Insects: Small Tortoiseshell butterflies were seen at Ardvule, South Glendale and Ardivachar, South Uist today. There are still a few Painted Lady butterflies around.

12th July:

South Uist: 116 summer plumage Knot in the South Ford off Hebridean Jewellery and 7 at Ardivachar. 6 x 1st summer Grey Plover in the South Ford and an immature Glaucous Gull at Ardivachar. 3 Crossbills at Bornish briefly in the morning. 3 Crossbills and a Wood Pigeon at Druidibeg plantation.

Insects: 404 macro moths of 24 species were trapped at South Glendale, South Uist last night including Double Square-spot, Scotch Annulet, Treble-bar, 3 Scarce Silver-Y and Small Rivulet. Dark Green Fritillary was at North Loch Eynort this afternoon.

11th July:

North Uist: A Quail was heard calling at Balranald this morning.

South Uist: 4 Crossbills were at Askernish this morning and at least 2 were at North Loch Eynort. A Glaucous Gull was at Ardivachar today.

Insects: 10 Dark Green Fritillaries, Grayling and 24 Large Heath on the west side of Roineval, South Uist.

9th July:

North Uist: Over 30 Crossbills were seen in the wooded garden at Cheese Bay.

8th July:

South Uist: 17 Crossbills in South Glendale today, plus 3 at Askernish.

South Uist: 2 Sandwich Terns at Smerclate today.

Insects: A Double Dart was trapped in Stornoway last night. A Hummingbird Hawkmoth was seen in the dunes on Berneray.

6th July:

Insects: A Barred Straw was trapped at Ardivachar, South Uist last night - this is the first record for the Outer Hebrides.

5th July:

South Uist: A single Swift and House Martin were seen at Askerinsh.

3rd July:

2nd July:

Lewis: 60+ Crossbills at Carloway and at least 25 at Brue.

Insects: A Double Dart moth was trapped at Ardivachar, South Uist last night. This is the first record for South Uist and only previously recorded from Harris.

1st July:

Lewis: Turtle Dove at Brue and House Martin nesting there. White-fronted Goose on Loch Branahuie again today.

North Uist: Female Scaup on Loch na Reivil, Hougharry. Black-tailed Godwit on Loch Sandary. Crossbills today included at least 20 at Langass, 10 at Ben Risary and 2 at Callernish.

South Uist: 2 Crossbills flew north over Drimsdale this evening.

Cetaceans: At least 6 Common Dolphins feeding off Scolpaig this afternoon.

Insects: What appears to be a Lempke's Gold Spot was trapped at South Glendale last night. It will be a first for the island if confirmed. Other new moths recorded for the Outer Hebrides recently include a suite of species from the Castle Grounds at the end of June including: Cream Wave, Clouded Border, Green Arches, Grey Arches, Coronet and possibly Miller.
