30th April:

Lewis: White-billed Diver off Skigersta. Cuckoo in South Lochs. Cuckoo near Glib Cheois.

North Uist: Ring Ouzel and 60 Whimbrel at Clettreval. Male Scaup at Balranald. Adult Ring-billed Gull Loch Sandary.

Benbecula: 1st yr Iceland Gull at Gramsdale. Male Scaup Coot Loch. 1st Lapwing chicks were seen at Loch Carnan today.

South Uist: Chiffchaff singing at Drimsdale. Female Snow Bunting by Loch Rog. Male Blackcap and 2 Siskin at Loch Eynort. 40 Pink-footed Geese landed at Tornish. 15 Scaup at north end of Loch Bee. Male Pintail on Loch an t-Saile. Cuckoo at Snishival.

Insects: 2 Green-veined White butterflies at North Loch Eynort, plus Common Heath moths. Brindled Ochre and Red Chestnut trapped at Drimsdale last night. An early wasp at Askernish turned out to be Vespula rufa.

29th April:

Lewis: 300+ Long-tailed Ducks on Loch Branahuie. 2 male Blackcap and at least 5 Chiffchaff (one nest building) in the Castle Grounds, Stornoway. 70 Pink-footed Geese heading north over Callanish.

Harris: Hoopoe seen at the roadside at Plocrapol (NG178927) today.

St. Kilda: 4 White-fronted Geese on Hirta.

North Uist: 14 Whimbrel at Balranald and 45 Pink-footed Geese heading north. Adult Ring-billed Gull Loch Sandary.

Benbecula: Sand Martin Loch Mor.

Insects: Emperor Moths and Common Heath (moths) in Glen Meavaig, Harris. Green-veined White butterflies in Lochmaddy, North Uist.

28th April:

Lewis: 2 White-billed Divers off Skigersta - one distant (1.5km) and the other around 600m off-shore. Chiffchaff at the Butt of Lewis. 16 Black-tailed Godwits at Loch Stiapavat and a Corncrake calling close to the hide.

North Uist: Grey-phase Gyr Falcon over Ben Risary plantation, heading north around mid-day.

South Uist: 35 Whimbrel at Ardvule plus 20 pale-bellied Brent Geese heading north.

Insects: Female Emperor Moth Rueval, S Uist.

27th April:

North Uist: 24 Black-tailed Godwits Loch Sandary. 14 Whimbrel and a Black-tailed Godwit Balranald. 30+ Whimbrel Tigharry. Lots of scattered flocks of Whimbrel around north-west of the island. 13 Barnacle Geese Griminish.

Benbecula: Sandwich Tern, 14 Black-tailed Godwits and 4 Whimbrel Loch Mor. 1st yr Iceland Gull Gramsdale.

Insects: male and female Belted Beauty Borve Point, Benbecula. Male Emperor moths on the wing this afternoon at Loch Euport, North Uist.

26th April:

Lewis: 5 Siskin in Leurbost.

North Uist: adult Ring-billed Gull Loch Sandary.

Benbecula: 1st yr Iceland Gull Gramsdale. 6 Whimbrel at Torlum.

South Uist: 1st yr Iceland Gull Howmore. 19 Whimbrel Howmore / Drimsdale. 1st yr Iceland Gull and 12 Black-tailed Godwits Smerclate.

Insects: male Belted Beauty Howmore.

Siskin (Frank Stark)

25th April:

Lewis: female Siskin Leurbost.

North Uist: adult Ring-billed Gull Loch Sandary. Corncrake seen on the road at knockintorran. Corncrake heard calling in Lochmaddy.

South Uist: 13 Whimbrel at Drimsdale plus a hybrid Carrion x Hooded Crow at Howmore. Wood Pigeon, 3 Redwing and a Goldcrest at Howmore. Long-eared Owl Druidibeg Plantation.

April and May is the time to look out for Rue-leaved Saxifrage. This tiny white flower (4-6 mm) is common on the machair and in sandy places.

24th April:

North Uist: Female Ring-necked Duck on Loch Scaraidh, Balranald plus Lapland Bunting and Sand Martin near the visitor centre. 3 Whimbrel Aird an Runair.

Benbecula: Sandwich Tern on Loch Mor and one in Stinky Bay. 2 Pomarine Skuas heading north off Stinky Bay this afternoon.              12 Gadwall and a male Scaup on Coot Loch. Siskin at Carnan and 25 Whimbrel heading north.

South Uist: 2nd yr Iceland Gull at Ardivachar.

Lapland Bunting (Steve Duffield)

23rd April:

North Uist: Adult Ring-billed Gull and 2 Iceland Gulls, plus 9 Black-tailed Godwits at Loch Sandary. Male Scaup and Black-tailed Godwit at Balranald. Lapland Bunting at Knockintorran machair.

South Uist: 38 Black-tailed Godwits at Loch an t-Saile plus other scattered birds in South Uist. 1st yr Iceland Gull Ardvule as well as 10 Whimbrel. Siskin and Lesser Redpoll at North Loch Eynort. 20 Scaup and 11 Whooper Swans at south end of Loch Bee. 42 pale-bellied Brent Geese at Peninerine.

Insects: male Belted Beauty at Bornish / Ardvule.

Ring-billed Gull and Lapland Bunting (John Kemp): Whimbrel (Steve Duffield)

22nd April:

Lewis: 2 White-billed Divers between Port of Ness and Skigersta.

St. Kilda: Grasshopper Warbler on Hirta.

North Uist: White-phase Gyr Falcon put in a brief appearance at Balranald, close to the visitor centre before heading inland towards Clettreval. Seen at knockintorran at 17:30 before heading towards Loch Sandary. Adult Ring-billed Gull at the south end of Loch Sandary.

21st April:

Benbecula: 17 Whimbrel in Stinky Bay and 4 over Liniclate. 10 Gadwall and a male Scaup on Coot Loch, plus a Black-tailed Godwit.

South Uist: Chiffchaff at Drimsdale and Grogarry Lodge. Bonaparte's Gull and 3 Black-tailed Godwits at Peninerine. Wood Pigeon at Howmore. 3 Little Tern in the South Ford and 2 Common Terns at North Bay. Great White Egret Loch nam Balgan / Grogarry Loch

Insects: Bombus muscorum at Carinish, North Uist. Emperor moths seen on Druidibeg National Nature Reserve. Male Belted Beauty at Peninerine, South Uist.

Bonaparte's Gull (John Kemp); Wood Pigeon (Steve Duffield)

20th April:

Lewis: White-billed Diver off Skigersta. Adult Little Gull and 1st yr Glaucous Gull Ness. 28 Pink-footed Geese over Pentland Road (05:55) and 50 over Balatrussel (11:30). Siskin over Balantrussel and 1 at Seilebost, Harris. 10 Gadwall in west Lewis and Whimbrel at Barvas. Corncrake calling at Achmore.

Sound of Harris: 10 Black-throated Divers, Slavonian Grebe and 200+ Gannets.

North Uist: Male Lapland Bunting Balranald.

Benbecula: 3 Black-tailed Godwit and 7 Gadwall Coot Loch.

South Uist: Male Black Redstart at Loch Carnan plus Grey Wagtail this morning. Bonaparte's Gull at Peninerine. 4 Black-tailed Godwit and a Whimbrel at Loch an t-Saile. Kentish Plover off Hebridean Jewellery. Male Lapland Bunting Kilpheder.

Insects: Good showing of Small Tortoiseshell butterflies today with widespread sightings in Benbecula and South Uist plus one from Dell, Lewis. Flame Carpet moth at Loch Carnan.

19th April:

Lewis: male and female Gadwall Loch Barvas. Lapland Bunting Stornoway farms. 2 Siskin Castle Grounds.

Benbecula: possible Alpine Swift seen heading north over Grimsay island.

South Uist: Female Marsh Harrier east Loch Bee.

Minke Whale stranded at Barvas, Lewis unfortunately died before any help could arrive.

18th April:

Lewis: adult Little Gull, 1st yr Iceland Gull and 500 Golden Plover on the machair adjacent to Loch Stiapavat. Female / 1st summer male Black Redstart and Goldcrest at the Butt of Lewis. 250 grey geese north off the Butt (13:55).

Harris: White-billed Diver reported from Sound of Taransay.

Sound of Harris: White-billed Diver seen from the ferry.

North Uist: Female Marsh Harrier Lochmaddy this morning.

South Uist: Female Marsh Harrier Eochar in the evening. 2 Willow Warbler South Glendale and Cuckoo. Bonaparte's Gull Peninerine.

17th April:

Lewis: 3 x 1st yr Iceland Gulls in Stornoway harbour. 110 Pink-footed Geese north north-west over Shawbost (12:50).

Sound of Harris: 1st yr Iceland Gull, Manx Shearwater and Puffin.

North Uist: Sedge Warbler and Swallow at Loch Sandary.

Benbecula: 2 Little Tern in South Ford off Grimsay island.

South Uist: 2 Willow Warblers and 2 Siskin at South Glendale. 22 Whimbrel Ardvule and a male Lapland Bunting in the evening. Bonaparte's Gull at Peninerine. 55 Barnacle Geese heading north-west over Bornish (am).

16th April:

North Uist: Male Green-winged Teal and a pair of Shoveler on Loch Sandray. 6 Black-tailed Godwit, 2 Whooper Swans and 2 male Shoveler on Loch nam Feithean. 2 male Gadwall on Loch na Reivil. 3 White Wagtails at Aird an Runair. Spotted Redshank this evening just south of Grimsay and east of the causeway.

Insects: Green-veined White at South Glendale. 2 Hebrew Characters trapped at Druidibeg plantation last night.

15th April:

St. Kilda: Chiffchaff, Blackcap and a single Goldcrest on Hirta. Also 2 pale-bellied Brent Geese on the island and 60 Pink-footed Geese heading north.

Benbecula: Arctic Tern and 7 Black-tailed Godwits were on Coot Loch. Male Garganey displaying to female Teal on Loch Fada. 1st yr Iceland Gull over Balivanich.

Insects: The hoverfly Eristalis intricarius was at Peter's Port, Benbecula. Small Tortoiseshell Drimsdale. Green-veined White butterfly at South Glendale.

14th April:

South Uist: adult Iceland Gull on Loch an Eilein. 20+ Black-tailed Godwits Loch an t-Saile. Arctic Skua over Carnan in the evening and a late report of 2 Whimbrel over Market Stance, Benbecula on 12th.

South Uist: Blue Tit at South Glendale. 24 Scaup on West Loch Bee.

Lewis: 6 Pink-footed Geese Barvas Cemetry. 200 White-fronted Geese north over Balantrussel (08:45) and 17 Greylags north a short while later. 1st yr Glaucous Gull and 1st yr Iceland Gull Ness. Dunnock at the Butt of Lewis lighthouse. Pale-bellied Brent Goose with 22 Barnacle Geese at Port of Ness.

South Uist: 2 Great Tits at Askernish briefly.

2 Porpoise just to the north of Port of Ness.

11th April:

Lewis: 3 male and 3 female Scaup Loch Tiumpan. Male and female Scaup off the Braigh, plus 3 Black-throated Divers.

Benbecula: 100+ Barnacle Geese over West Camp, Balivanich (04:20).

South Uist: 80 White-fronted Geese heading north over Askernish in the morning.  319 Barnacle Geese and 131 White-fronted Geese over South Glendale (09:00 - 10:00). 5 Goldcrests, a Goldfinch, 30 Redwing and a Wood Pigeon in South Glendale. Great White Egret Loch Grogarry and 1st yr Iceland Gull Loch nam Balgan. Adult Bonaparte's Gull Peninerine.

10th April:

Lewis: 2 x 1st yr Iceland Gulls Stornoway harbour. 2 White-billed Divers just to the north of Port of Ness

Sound of Harris (from ferry): 10 Slavonian Grebe and 300 Long-tailed Duck, plus 40 Great Northern Divers and 2 Black-throated Divers.

North Uist: dark-phase Arctic Skua north-east of Langass.

Insects: Bombus jonellus seen South Uist.

9th April:

South Uist: Male Garganey, female Pintail and 2 Black-tailed Godwits at Loch an t-Saile. 4 Black-tailed Godwits north end of Loch Bee. 2 adult and a 1st yr Iceland Gull Howmore, plus a Slavonian Grebe off-shore. 3 Slavoniain Grebes off Drimsdale and 19 Barnacle Geese north (08:35). 23 Whooper Swans north at South Glendale (09:50).

Insects: 2 male Belted Beauties at Howmore this morning and 2 males and a female seen at Garrynamonie, South Uist. Small Tortoiseshell at Rueval, South Uist.

8th April:

Lewis: Chiffchaff singing at Tong. 19 White-fronted Geese at Barvas and 35 heading north over Barvas Moor.

Uist: Goose movements today including the following over Muir of Aird, Benbecula: 67 White-fronted Geese, 24 Greylag Geese and 3 Barnacles all travelling north together (11:45); 9 White-fronts and 34 Greylags heading north (12:10); 140 White-fronts heading north (12:18); 120 White-fronts, north (12:29) and 50 White-fronts, north (12:46).220 White-fronted Geese heading north, South Glendale (11:00). Two parties of White-fronts (73 and 44) were also seen heading north-west over Grismay at around 13:00. Male Garganey, female Pintail, 4 Gadwall and 5 Black-tailed Godwits at               Loch an t-Saile.

7th April:

Benbecula: Common Sandpiper on Grimsay Island, east Benbecula.

South Uist: adult Bonaparte's Gull, adult Iceland Gull and male Garganey at Peninerine. 1st yr Iceland Gull North Bay. 21 Whooper Swans and 27 White-fronted Geese heading north-west off Ardivachar this evening.

6th April:

Benbecula: 2 White-fronted Geese and 9 Pink-footed Geese at Torlum.

South Uist: adult Bonaparte's Gull at Peninerine this morning plus 1st yr Iceland Gull. Male Garganey on the sea with Eiders, flew off to pool along coast at Stoneybridge. 23 White-fronted Geese flew in from far west (during heavy snow / hail shower) and landed on machair by Aird Micheal. Snow Bunting on Drimsdale machair. 11 White-fronted Geese in off the sea, from the west at Ardivachar late afternoon. 59 White-fronted Geese at Askernish. Female Pintail, 2 male and a female Gadwall on Loch an t-Saile. 1st yr Iceland Gull at Ardivachar.

Lewis: 2 x 1st yr Glaucous Gulls at Barvas. 2 adult and 2 x 1st yr Iceland Gulls in Stornoway.

North Uist: 15 Whooper Swans Oban Trumisgarry.

Benbecula: 1st w Iceland Gull Gramsdale.

South Uist: adult Bonaparte's Gull still at Peninerine, plus 3 x 1st yr and 1 adult Iceland Gull.

4th April:

Lewis: White-billed Diver south of Skigersta. 4 Glaucous Gulls and an Iceland Gull around Ness. 3 Glaucous Gulls and an Iceland Gull in Siadar / Balantrussel area. 2 Iceland Gulls and a Glaucous Gull Barvas plus an Iceland Gull at Borve. 100 Barnacle Geese on the ground at Ness plus 56 moving up the coast. Wheatear at the Butt.

North Uist: 2 Long-tailed Tits, a Siskin and numerous redpolls reported from Johnson's Plantation. 5 Wheatears on Grimsay today plus 102 White-fronted Geese heading north-west over the island at 13:06. 140 White-fronted Geese heading north over Loch Portain. 

Benbecula: 1st yr and 2nd yr Iceland Gull Gramsdale. 2 male Scaup Coot Loch.

South Uist: adult Bonaparte's Gull Howmore / Peninerine; also adult Iceland Gull and 1st yr Glaucous Gull in the area. Male Garganey and female Pintail Loch an t-Saile (Pintail flew onto Loch Bee). Black-tailed Godwit Balgarva turning. 2nd yr Glaucous Gull North Bay.

3rd April:

North Uist: Wheatear on Baleshare.

South Uist: Wheatear on Rueval. Male Garganey and 2nd yr Glaucous Gull Loch an t-Saile. Kentish Plover off Hebridean Jewellery. Whimbrel Grogarry.

Lewis: 1st yr Iceland Gull Stornoway harbour. 2 Siskin Stornoway.

South Uist: Adult Iceland Gull Howmore. 1st yr Iceland Gull and Wheatear Ardivachar. 2 Black-tailed Godwits Balgarva.

Lewis: 2 1st yr Iceland Gulls at Gress. A Lapland and 2 Snow Buntings at Tolsta Head, plus 36 Barnacle Geese.

North Uist: 2 Siskin flew south over Clachan Farm. Jack Snipe at Sponish. Male Lesser Scaup Loch an Fhaing, Grimsay.

Benbecula: 2 male Scaup Coot Loch.

South Uist: 1st yr Iceland Gull over Loch Skipport. Kentish Plover off Hebridean Jewellery. Male Garganey and 27 Black-tailed Godwits Loch an t-Saile.
