Lewis: Rosy Starling still in Upper Siadar. Black-tailed Godwit at Loch Stiapavat. 18 Crossbills at Crossbost.

North Uist: Grasshopper Warbler reeling at Langass.

29th July:

Lewis: Rose-coloured Starling at Siadar still.

South Uist: Crossbill at South Glendale.

28th July:

South Uist: female Goldeneye Loch Ardvule. Crossbill South Glendale.

Insects: At least 3 Dark Green Fritillaries at Drumsdale, South Uist this morning.

27th July:

Lewis: Rose-coloured Starling at Upper Siadar. Glaucous Gull on the shore at Balantrussal.

Insects: Good amounts of butterfly activity today with Graylings at South Glendale, South Uist and around 30 at the eastern end of Acarsaid Valley, Eriskay. Dark Green Fritillaries were also very common at the latter site.

610 macro moths of 33 species were trapped at Drimsdale last night. Scotch Annulet was found during the day at South Glendale.

A huge colony of around 40,000 Colletes (probably succinctus) were near South Glendale. The bees were seen swarming over the ground with one concentration witnessed attacking a bumblebee.

Other: Basking Shark was west of Aird an Runair (from a boat). Compass Jellyfish off Eriskay.

26th July:

Lewis: Rose-coloured Starling at Siadar.

Insects: 899 macro moths of 33 species trapped at Drimsdale, South Uist last night.

25th July:

Lewis: Black-tailed Godwit at plus 9 Black-throated Divers off-shore. 21 Black-throated Divers off the Braigh.

Benbecula: 2 Swifts at Stinky Bay.

South Uist: Osprey over Loch Bee (West Gerinish end).

24th July:

Lewis: Rose-coloured Starling Barvas.

Benbecula: 2 Black-tailed Godwits Loch Mor.

South Uist: 2 Swifts south at Smerclate this morning. Grasshopper Warbler singing South Glendale plus family of Whitethroats (4 juvs). Juvenile Cuckoos at South Glendale and Snishival.

Insects: In South Uist lots of Green-veined White, Meadow Brown and Common Blue butterflies around this afternoon. Small Tortoiseshell at Smerclate and Dark Green Fritillarty at Rueval. Dark Green Fritiallries and at least 5 Grayling on Eriskay.

Great Yellow Bumblebees at Smerclate and Eochar. A Colony of over 200 Colletes bees above Acarsaid Valley, Eriskay.

Moths trapped at Carnan, South Uist last night: Oblique Carpet 3, Flame Carpet 1, Red Carpet 1, Chevron 2, July Highflyer 7, Lime Speck Pug 2, Garden Tiger 14, Heart & Dart 1, Flame Shoulder 3, Mottled Rustic 2, Large Yellow Underwing 11, Lesser Yellow Underwing 1, True Lovers Knot 6, Dotted Clay 6, Six-striped Rustic 1, Cabbage 4, Bright-line Brown Eye 1, Campion 7, Smoky Wainscot 46, Shark 1, Dark Arches 18, Light Arches 1, Double Lobed 9, Ear Moth sp 4, Burnished Brass 15, Gold Spot 5, Silver Y 1, Beautiful Golden Y 2, Straw Dot 2, Snout 7. Additional species caught at Drimsdale include Grass Rivulet, Ling Pug, Antler, Pretty Pinion, White-line Dart, Map-winged Swift, Common Rustic and Angle Shades.

Cetaceans: 7 Killer Whales showing well off Skigersta, plus 4 White-beaked Dolphins and several Porpoise in the evening.

23rd July:

St. Kilda: Pectoral Sandpiper Hirta.

South Uist: Osprey fishing lochs between Loch Carnan and Loch Bee this afternoon.

Other: Minke Whale feeding in Lochmaddy Bay at 19:00.

18th July:

South Uist: 21 Black-tailed Godwits Loch Bornish.

17th July:

St. Kilda: Snowy Owl seen on Hirta. Sooty Shearwater seen on route to Hirta.

Other: 2 Porpoises in mouth of Lochmaddy harbour.

Insects: Plenty of the commoner butterflies around today in the fine weather with Green-veined Whites being particularly abundant. There were 45 species of macro moths caught last night from three traps in South Uist (Carnan, Drimsdale and Druidibeg plantation). Some of the more interesting species included Double Lobed, Treble-bar and Small Fan-footed Wave. There were also 5 Straw Dots and 6 Oblique Carpets trapped.

16th July:

Lewis: Rose-coloured Starling in Upper Barvas behind the old church. 2 Sooty Shearwaters and 9 Storm Petrels in a 3 hour watch off Labost.

North Uist: Pair of Whooper Swans with 6 cygnets on Loch Scaraidh, Balranald.

15th July:

Insects: Potter Wasp (Ancistrocerus Scoticus) and nest at Rueval, South Uist.

Insects: 21 species of macro moth trapped at Drimsdale, South Uist last night: 15 Dark Arches, 13 Smoky Wainscot, 10 Map-winged Swift, 8 Burnished Brass, 6 Campion, 5 Lime Speck Pug, 4 Garden Tiger, 4 Light Arches, 3 Small Square Spot, 3 Beautiful Golden Y, 2 Flame Shoulder, 2 Large Yellow Underwing, 2 Clouded-bordered Brindle, Spectacle, Red Carpet, Grass Rivulet, Dotted Clay, Bright-line Brown-eye, Dusky Brocade, Shears and an Antler.

12th July:

Lewis: Sooty Shearwater passed the Butt of Lewis. Imm. Glaucous Gull at Loch Barvas. Garden Warbler Willow Glen, Stornoway.

South Uist: 4 Crossbills feeding in a Rowan tree, NE of Hecla.

Insects: Dark Green Fritillary just to the north of Usinish Lighthouse, South Uist.

Other: A school of dolphins distantly to the north of Ushinish Lighthouse were very likely Common Dolphins.

11th July:

Insects: The Following were trapped at Carnan, South Uist last night: Magpie 1, Garden Tiger 2, True Lover's Knot 2, Small Square-spot 3, Bright-line Brown Eye 4, Campion 1, Smoky Wainscot 2, Dark Arches 2, Ear Moth sp. 1, Burnished Brass 6, Beautiful Golden Y 4, Snout 2.

9th July:

Lewis: Rose-coloured Starling at Barvas.

Insects: Large Heath at Drimsdale. 3 Grayling at South Glendale today.

8th July

Lewis: Quail calling near Barvas Cemetry. Crossbill at Marybank, Castle Grounds.

North Uist: Roseate Tern reported from Loch Brusda, Berneray.

Insects: Wood Tiger and many Magpie moths along the Pentland Road, Lewis plus at least 10 Large Heath butterflies (close to the turning for Achmore). Lots of Speckled Wood butterflies from Marybank - Lew's College, Stronoway. Also Large Whites, Small Whites, Meadow Browns and Common Blue butterflies. Dragonflies: Common Hawker, Large Red Damselfly and Common Blue Damselfly. Numerous butterflies at South Glendale too today with Dark Green Fritillary, Common Blue and Meadow Browns; plus Six-spot Burnet moth.

6th July

Lewis: Green Sandpiper flew south over Balantrushal. Crossbill at Marybank, Castle Grounds plus at least 20 Siskins including juveniles.

South Uist: 2 Crossbills at South Glendale.

Insects: Lesser Swallow Prominent moth - trapped at Marybank, Castle Grounds, Lewis - 1st for the Outer Hebrides. Also Speckled Wood butterfly.

5th July

Insects: Ringlet butterfly at South Glendale, South Uist - 1st for the Outer Hebrides.

Lewis: 3 Crossbills at Achmore. Quail calling at Bragar Bay.

North Uist: female Snowy Owl at Aird an Runair, Balranald.

South Uist: 2 Ospreys seen over Loch Carnan this afternoon. Crossbill at South Glendale.

Other: 15 ft Basking Shark feeding in the moth of Lochmaddy Bay (10:30). Lots of cetaceans on the Uig  - Lochmaddy crossing this evening with 5 Minke Whales (close to Skye) and at least 8 Propoise.

Insects: At Carnan last night:  97 moths of 29 species as follows:- Flame Carpet 3, Red Carpet 1, Silver ground Carpet 2, Dark Marbled Carpet 1, Lime speck Pug 5, Common Pug 1, Narrow winged Pug 1, Magpie 11, Mottled Beauty 1, Poplar Hawk-moth 3, Garden Tiger 3, White Ermine 4, Buff Ermine 1, Flame Shoulder 3, Large Yellow Underwing 1, True Lover's Knot 1, Small Square-spot 10, Glaucous Shears 4, Bright-line Brown Eye 4, Campion 2, Dark Arches 18, Clouded-bordered Brindle 5, Middle Barred Minor 1, Double Lobed 1, Burnished Brass 1, Beautiful Golden Y 3, Spectacle 3, Straw Dot 1, Snout 1.

Also last night an interesting yellow underwing sp. moth trapped at Askernish.

3rd July:

Lewis: Quail calling at Stornoway airport. Grasshopper Warbler at Bragar.

North Uist: Stock Dove reported from Grimsay.

South Uist: Swift over Loch Carnan.

Other: 5 Risso's Dolphins and a Basking Shark in the mouth of Lochmaddy Bay.

 

1st July:

Lewis: Canada Geese have bred in the Carloway area with 3 goslings seen on 24th June.
