31st August: 30th August: Lewis: A Red-backed Shrike was reported briefly from shrubs by Marybank Lodge, Stornoway this evening. 21 Crossbills were at Willowglen. 13 Crossbills were at Stewart Drive and a mixed flock of 50 Siskins and redpolls near Cuddy Point in the Castle Grounds. 12 Sooty Shearwaters, 8 Storm Petrels and 27 Brent Geese passed Labost this morning. North Uist: 29 Grey Plover were at Bayhead today. 125 Brent Geese, 20 Common Scoter and 4 Sooty Shearwaters were seen off Griminish Point between 07:30 and 15:30. South Uist: The American Golden Plover and 2 Black-tailed Godwits were on Bornish Machair. 17 Black-tailed Godwits are in the south-west corner of Loch Bee. Insects: A single Dark Green Fritillary was around South Glendale, South Uist.
29th August: Lewis: 6 Sooty Shearwaters passed Labost and one was seen from the Butt of Lewis. North Uist: 6 pale-bellied Brent Geese passed Balranald followed by two flocks of 25 and 30+ passed Griminish. Benbecula: 30 Black-tailed Godwits at Torlum. South Uist: A juvenile Pomarine Skua and 41 pale-bellied Brents flew passed Ardvule this morning. 8 Brent Geese were in the south-west corner of Loch Bee. An adult American Golden Plover is on Bornish Machair this evening. At least 33 Black-tailed Godwits are at Drimsdale.
28th August: Harris: A juvenile Little Stint was at Northton. Benbecula: At least 40 Black-tailed Godwits are still at Torlum. South Uist: 7 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff are in the south-west corner of Loch Bee.
27th August: Lewis: 2 Swift were at Loch Stiapabhat and a Black-tailed Godwit was on the machair close by. A lone Barnacle Goose was in the Callanish / Breasacleit area. North Uist: A juvenile Yellow-legged Gull was seen at Balranald in the evening. 26th August: Harris: 35 Common Scoters in the Sound of Taransay. Benbecula: 82 Black-tailed Godwits and 2 Ruff at Torlum. Marine sightings: Around 15 Common Dolphins were off Tiumpan Head in the last afternoon. 25th August: North Uist: At least 22 Black-tailed Godwits and 3 Ruff at Loch Sandary.
24th August: Lewis: 80 Manx Shearwaters feeding within 15 metres of the shore from the Braighe this morning. 2 Ruff and 9 Knot at Steinish. 7 Whimbrel over Branahuie this morning. North Uist: 21 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff on Loch Sandary. 37 Knot and 37 Grey Plover at Grenitote. Benbecula: 79 Black-tailed Godwits and 3 Ruff at Torlum. South Uist: A Juvenile Red-necked Phalarope was feeding along the tide line at Ardivachar this morning. 42 Black-tailed Godwits were in the fields by Loch an' t-Saile.
23rd August: North Uist: 2 Ruff at Loch Sandary. Benbecula: 7 Knot in Stinky Bay. At least 60 Black-tailed Godwits at Torlum this evening. South Uist: 43 Grey Plover and 162 Bar-tailed Godwits off Hebridean Jewellery. At least 30 Whimbrel were in a freshly cut field at East Kilbride. Barra: A male and female Crossbill were at North Bay. 22nd August: Lewis: A juvenile Little Gull was seen between Cross Street and Sand Street, Stornoway today. 29 Knot and 25 Greenshank were at Steinish. North Uist: 11 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff were on Loch Sandary. South Uist: A Ruff was at the south-west end of Loch Bee. 13 Black-tailed Godwits were on Loch an' t-Saile and 7 flew south-west over Ardivachar this afternoon. Marine Sightings: 25 Common Dolphins and 6 White-beaked Dolphins off Tiumpan Head this morning.
21st August: North Uist: 4 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff at Loch Sandary. South Uist: 91 Grey Plover on the South Ford this morning. 2 Black-tailed Godwits at Loch an t-Saile.
20th August: Lewis: 18 Black-tailed Godwits and 7 knot at Branahuie. North Uist: 2 Black-tailed Godwits at Clachan Sands. 24 Black-tailed Godwits at Loch Sandary. Benbecula: 8 Black-tailed Godwits, a Ruff and 3 Knot in Stinky Bay. South Uist: A Semipalmated Sandpiper was on the South Ford between Carnan and Hebrdean Jewellery this morning; also 5 Black-tailed Godwits and 71 Grey Plover there.
19th August: Benbecula: 6 Black-tailed Godwits, a Ruff and 2 Knot in Stinky Bay. 2 Black-tailed Godwits at Torlum. South Uist: A Common Sandpiper, 9 Knot and around 40 mixed Pied and White Wagtails at Rubha Ardvule this evening.
18th August: Benbecula: 6 Black-tailed Godwits in Stinky Bay and 2 more at nearby Loch Mor. South Uist: 49 Grey Plover and 5 Knot were on the South Ford this afternoon. 17th August: North Uist: A Quail was seen and heard at Balranald today. A Black-tailed Godwit was with a small flock of Bar-tailed Godwits at Griminish and 5 juvenile Black-tailed Godwits were at Loch Sandary. A juvenile Cuckoo was at Langass. Insects: 2 Red Admirals were at South Glendale, South Uist. At least 70 Painted Ladies were at Balranald. 2 Peacock, 3 Painted Ladies and 5 Small Tortoiseshells at North Loch Eynort today.
16th August: Lewis: 7 Long-tailed Tits (at least 4 juveniles) in the Marybank area of the Castle Grounds, Stornoway on 14th. Benbecula: A Ruff was in Stinky Bay today. South Uist: 12 Black-tailed Godwits few south over Bornish Machair. 37 Black-tailed Godwits and a Knot at the south-west corner of Loch Bee. Insects: 3 Painted Ladies and a Red Admiral at Claddach Baleshare and 3 Small Tortoiseshells and a Painted Lady at Carinish. 2 Painted Ladies, a Peacock, Red Admiral and Dark Green Fritillary at Bornish today. 15th August: Lewis: Pomarine Skua, 5 Sooty Shearwaters and 3 Storm Petrels off Labost in a 3 hour watch in the afternoon. South Uist: 3 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff on Bornish Machair this morning. 17 Knot in off the sea at Rubha Ardvule this afternoon. Juvenile Black-tailed Godwit at Peninerine.
14th August: North Uist: There are still 7 Whooper Swans on Loch Sandary and the pair at Balranald still have 6 cygnets. South Uist: A Sandwich Tern was on the beach at North Bay this afternoon. Insects: A Bordered Beauty moth was trapped at Druidibeg Plantation last night. This is the first record for the Outer Hebrides. 410 moths of 35 different species were trapped at South Glendale, South Uist last night.
13th August: Lewis: A Quail was flushed at Bragar today and a Sooty Shearwater was off Port of Ness. Benbecula: 3 juvenile Black-tailed Godwits were on Loch Mor. South Uist: A Wood Pigeon was at Balgarva this morning. 2 Crossbills flew over Drimsdale this evening. Insects: A Hummingbird Hawkmoth was seen at Bragar today. A Dark Green Fritillary was at Carnan, South Uist whilst at South Glendale a total of 3 Peacocks, 1 Red Admiral, 1 Small Tortoiseshell, 5 Painted Ladies, 2 Grayling, 5 Dark Green Fritillaries and a late Large Heath were all spotted. Marine Sightings: 30 Common Dolphins were seen south of the Braigh, Lewis. At least two groups of Risso's Dolphins; one of which was mixed with Bottle-nosed Dolphins off the Butt of Lewis today.
12th August: Lewis: Grey Wagtail to the north of Stornoway today. 11th August: Lewis: 4 Storm Petrels, 6 Sooty Shearwaters and 5 Great Skuas off Labost this evening. 118 Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Knot and 6 Whimbrel in Bragar Bay. South Uist: 22 Whimbrel south at Ardivachar followed by 50+ south at Stoneybridge and 11 south at Peninerine this morning. Two flocks of Black-tailed Godwits 35 and 24 south at Bornish at around 1 pm. 5 Storm Petrels, 1 Great Skua and 74 Whimbrel over the sea off Ardvule this morning. A Juvenile Cuckoo is still at South Glendale.
10th August: Lewis: Wood Sandpiper at Loch Roisnavat, 2 Km north of Newmarket. North Uist: A Quail is still calling at Balranald, 1/2 a mile along the track passed the visitor centre. South Uist: At least 3 male and 2 female Crossbills at North Loch Eynort today. A Green Sandpiper flew south over South Glendale at 10:30 pm Insects: A Dun-bar moth was trapped at North Loch Eynort last night. This is the first record of this species in the Outer Hebrides. 19 Grayling and 21 Dark Green Fritillaries seen on the south side of Eriskay today. Marine Sightings: At least 20 Bottle-nosed Dolphins feeding close inshore to the south of Ardvule this evening.
9th August: North Uist: A Hobby was reported from Ben Risary Plantation at Claddach Vallay this morning.
8th August: Lewis: 16 Knot and 9 Bar-tailed Godwits at Steinish. North Uist: Black-tailed Godwit at Hougharry. Cuckoo along the Committee Road. Benbecula: A Ruff and 8 Black-tailed Godwits at Torlum. Insects: At least 50 Painted Ladies and a Red Admiral at Balranald and 20 Painted Ladies at Griminish, North Uist.
7th August: Lewis: Grey Wagtail over Urqhart Terrace, Stornoway this morning. Marine Sightings: A Minke Whale was in Broad Bay off Port na Giuran today. Insects: A Peacock butterfly was at South Glendale. 5 Painted Ladies and a Small Tortoiseshell were at Drimsdale and a Small Tortoiseshell was at Howmore.
6th August: South Uist: 7 House Martins and 8 Swallows passed Ardivachar today. Insects: 2 Painted Ladies and a Small Tortoiseshell at Smerlcate, South Uist this morning. 2 Dark Green Fritillaries on Eriskay. Dark Green Fritillary and Small Tortoieshell at Drimsdale. Painted Lady at Howmore.
5th August: Benbecula: 6 Black-tailed Godwits at Torlum this morning. South Uist: 25 knot and 5 adult Grey Plover on the South Ford. 2 Knot off Balgarva and 5 in North Bay.
4th August: Lewis: A Short-eared Owl was at Skigersta (scrace in Lewis and Harris) today and a Swift was at Loch Stiapabhat. White-fronted Goose and 2 Long-tailed Ducks at Loch Branahuie. South Uist: 54 Black-tailed Godwits heading south over Kilpheder Machair this morning. plus a single Black-tailed Godwit at Bornish. 5 Swifts were seen heading south passed Ardivachar this afternoon. 2 Swifts were hawking over Stoneybridge early evening and the moulting male Goosander is still at Peninerine. Another Swift was at Eochar Machair this evening. 3rd August: Lewis: A Swift was seen over Branahuie around lunch time and the White-fronted Goose and 2 Long-tailed Ducks are still on the loch there. South Uist: 13 Black-tailed Godwits over Drimsdale this evening and 6 Knot at Howmore. Insects: A Golden-rod Pug was trapped at Druidibeg last night. This is the first record of this species for the Outer Hebrides.
2nd August: Lewis: White-fronted Goose and 2 Long-tailed Ducks on Loch Branahuie. South Uist: An eclipse male Goosander is at Peninerine and a juvenile Ruff was on the tide line at Ardivachar this afternoon. 1st August: South Uist: 2 Black-tailed Godwits flew south at Balgarva this evening. An immature Glaucous Gull is still at Ardivachar. |
